Expectation + Appreciation
"Expectations are resentments under construction.” - quote attributed to Anne Lamott
Even as I hear a ring of clarity in Anne Lamott’s quote, I like looking forward to things. I find the run up to my April birthday especially fun! Wondering what we’ll do that day to celebrate, what my family has in store for me can really add to my enjoyment. But over the years my wisdom has taught me to be open and accepting of whatever materializes — to let go of specific expectations and appreciate whatever shows up.
It’s when I put all my eggs in one 'expectation basket' that I set myself up for feelings of disappointment and resentment. Disappointment being the feeling I keep for myself and resentment the one I share with others (verbally or nonverbally.) Neither of which are desirable guests at anyone's birthday party!
I’ve learned that I can enjoy open-ended expectations, the fun of looking forward to something (anything!) while holding to the commitment of accepting whatever happens. This has served me well. Trusting that it’s all good and knowing that I have everything I need helps me set a gracious and appreciative tone, which truly benefits myself and others.
Expectations with acceptance — it’s like having my cake and eating it too!
